Libraries, museums, historical associations, churches, and universities frequently contain a wealth of history-related materials including books, microfilmed newspapers, vertical files, and unpublished manuscript collections. This section lists many of these institutions and describes their archives under four main categories: public libraries, museums, historical associations, church-affiliates, and universities. Within each category, the collections are listed in alphabetical order.

Much of this information originally came from the New Jersey Historical Commission publication, Guide to New Jersey Historical Manuscripts in Morris County compiled by Mary R. Murrin; the descriptions have been considerably revised, updated, and expanded, and new entries have been added.
